The East of England Co-op has announced it is to close its Supermarket on Abbots Road in Colchester.

The site has been sold for development as a retail site with the current East of England Co-op store to close permanently on Saturday 10 September 2016.

Roger Grosvenor, Joint Chief Executive for the East of England Co-op said:

"Our supermarket on Abbots Road requires major refurbishment. We have investigated all the options but unfortunately the level of investment required means that none are viable for this location, in the increasingly competitive retail offering within Colchester.”

“As a member owned business we have a duty to run our business effectively for our members across the region. Sometimes this involves making extremely difficult decisions, and on this occasion the option to sell the site is unfortunately the most viable option.”

“This is no reflection on the hard work of our colleagues at the store, who we know have provided great service for many years. They are currently in a period of consultation and we are exploring redeployment options with them.”

“Closing a store is not something that we do lightly, however we do have to balance providing a service to local communities whilst ensuring our overall business succeeds.”
