Cost of school uniforms impacting young carers in Great Yarmouth

Thanks to a donation from our Community Cares Fund, young carers will have warm coats and school uniforms this winter.

The East of England Co-op Community Cares Fund is our way of giving back to local communities. With the generous donations of our customers and members, we’re proud to support groups across Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk as they work to make a positive impact for people in need.

Thanks to you, we’ve just awarded over £100,000 to 26 charities and community groups changing the lives of more than 4,700 people in our region. From providing school uniforms for young carers to helping very young children enjoy good, nutritious food, our Community Cares Fund is making a huge impact.

That’s why we’ve donated £2,500 to Great Yarmouth & Gorleston Young Carers (GYGYC) to help them provide school uniforms for 50 families.

GYGYC is a charity which helping young people aged 5 -19 years old who care for a friend or family member. By offering peer support and respite from their caring responsibilities, they help the young people to navigate the challenges they face.

Affording school uniforms can be really difficult for young carers. They often have to live on tightly restricted budgets, constantly juggling financial pressures alongside the needs of those they support. Once food, housing costs and bills have been prioritised, there may be little left to afford the basics of school uniforms and shoes.

Terry McRowan, Manager at GYGYC says: “Our families have shared with us how much they were going to struggle to purchase items of the uniform their children require to return to school after this summer break.

GYGYC has been able to support these families thanks to this grant from the East of England Co-op Community Cares Fund. These young carers can now return to school with new items of uniform that fit, which will stop them from standing out amongst their peers.”
