one of the oldest working breweries in the UK dating back to 1799!

As one of the oldest working breweries in the UK Greene King has been brewing from its brewery site in Westgate Street in Bury St Edmunds since 1799, with brewing in the town documented as far back as the Doomsday Book.

Today Greene King brews over ½ million pints of finely crafted beer a day from it’s Westgate Brewery, using the finest locally sourced malted barley.  The jewel in Greene King brewery’s crown is its large ancient oak vats from which it produces 5X, a 12.5% abv rich distinctive beer.

Oak aged for two years, the ale is rarely served in its purity due to its scarcity, but instead is blended with Old Speckled Hen, the UK’s number one premium ale, to create the deliciously rich and fruity Old Crafty Hen. Greene King has some of the UK’s favourite beers in its portfolio, including Greene King IPA, which has the fastest rate of sale of any cask ale in pubs and bars.

Last year over 32 million pints of Greene King IPA were brewed, the equivalent of filling six Olympic sized swimming pools. Other beers include Abbot Ale, named in honour of the abbots who used the brew at the Abbey of St Edmunds in Bury St Edmunds, Yardbird Pale Ale and the most recent addition, Ice Breaker Pale Ale, a deliciously refreshing pale ale brewed by Greene King’s brewing apprentices.

"East of England provides a perfect shop window for our beers within our heartland of East Anglia. This means we can introduce a broader range of our beers to shoppers – both old favourites and exciting new ones. Ale drinkers love discovering new beers and so this policy works really well for East of England, their shoppers, and Greene King."
