Don't Be A Tosser

Following the unwelcome rise in litter since lockdown restrictions were lifted, BBC Radio Suffolk relaunched their Don’t Be A Tosser campaign in an effort to Keep Suffolk Clean.

The East of England Co-op were delighted to join forces and become official supporters.

As well as tackling rising levels of litter following the lockdown, this year’s campaign also aimed to reduce fly tipping and graffiti.

How the East of England Co-op helped

The Community Team and senior management teams completed six of our own social distanced litter picks in Aldeburgh, Lavenham, Dedham, Framlingham, Beccles and Felixstowe, collecting over 20 bags of rubbish in the summer.

We also joined the Proud of Mersea Volunteers on their clean-up of Mersea Island, collecting over 20 bags of litter in just two hours, as well as the Pickerel Project in Stowmarket, picking up 140kg of rubbish left along, and in, the River Gipping.

Our food stores in Suffolk also showed their support by displaying posters and customers were able to pop in to collect a free ‘Don’t Be A Tosser’ car windscreen sticker to show their support.

Top Tips for Litter Picking

When litter picking, we’d recommend that you use the following in order to remain safe:

  • Face Masks
  • Gloves
  • Hi Viz waistcoat
  • Suitable footwear
  • Litter picking stick

Litter can be bagged but take caution with broken glass which should be removed with a brush and shovel or a litter pick and then wrapped before bagging.

Do not remove the following if found:

  • Asbestos
  • Drug related items including needles
  • Unknown liquids

Instead, contact your local Council and arrange for the items to be removed by trained staff.

Take particular care when litter picking beside roads and ensure that you face oncoming traffic.

If you would like any further guidance, contact your local Council.

How can I get involved and make a difference?

You can certainly make a difference!

We are encouraging individuals from the same household or bubble to conduct their own litter picks in their local area. This could be a family weekend litter pick at the beach or in the countryside to volunteering an hour in the evening at your local park.

Unfortunately we are unable to organise group litter picks at the present moment of time.

You can download a poster to display to show your support and hopefully make people think about littering.
