How the rising cost-of-living is affecting people with disabilities in Waveney

Disability Advice North East Suffolk (DANES) are supporting people with disabilities through the cost-of-living crisis, thanks to a donation from our Community Cares Fund.

The East of England Co-op Community Cares Fund is our way of giving back to local communities. With the generous donations of our customers and members, we’re proud to support groups across Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk as they work to make a positive impact for people in need.

Thanks to you, we’ve just awarded over £100,000 to 26 charities and community groups changing the lives of more than 4,700 people in our region. From providing school uniforms for young carers to helping very young children enjoy good, nutritious food, our Community Cares Fund is making a huge impact.

With the costs of living rising, many people are facing a challenging winter ahead. And people living with disabilities are likely to be affected more deeply than most. That’s why we’ve just awarded Disability Advice North East Suffolk (DANES) a grant of £5,000 to support their ‘Warm and Well in Waveney’ project.

DANES is a charity run by disabled people, for disabled people and their carers living in Lowestoft, Waveney and the surrounding area. They provide specialist advice and support to those with disabilities or long-term health conditions so that they can lead active and fulfilling lives, maintain independence and improve mental wellbeing.

Trish Riches, manager at DANES, says: “Disabled people are likely to be disproportionately affected by the rising costs of living. They may be on a lower income, not have the ability to manage their finances or even require the additional use of gas and electricity for specialist equipment. Through this project we can help 25 people on an individual basis improve their wellbeing by reducing levels of anxiety about their finances.

“We are so grateful for the funding from the East of England Co-op Community Cares Fund.  This will enable us to support people, whose mental health is being adversely affected by the cost-of-living crisis.”
