Sale of Woodbridge store to East of England Co-op successful

We have confirmed we will be opening a new supermarket in Woodbridge later this year, having successfully purchased the former Budgens store on Hamblin Road in Woodbridge.

The 7,000sqft store closed on Wednesday 17 August for extensive refurbishment works to create a new generation East of England Co-op Supermarket. Works will begin in the coming weeks, with the opening scheduled for late October.

Roger Grosvenor, our Joint Chief Executive said: “This new supermarket will look unlike any other East of England Co-op store.

“It will stock a wide range of the East of England Co-op’s multi-award winning Sourced Locally produce, which will also welcome all local producers currently stocking the Budgens store, alongside every day essentials, Deli-to-Go, beers, wines and spirits and an in-store bakery.”

Our store on The Thoroughfare, including the Subway, will remain open until the newly renovated supermarket opens its doors later this year. Colleagues will then transfer to the new supermarket less than 400ft away, joining the current team at the Budgens store who have all transferred to the local retailer.

Roger added: “It was important to us that we protected the jobs of those at our own Thoroughfare store and the former Budgens, who’ve been providing a service to the local community for many years.

“Over the coming weeks all of us at the East of England Co-op will be working hard to deliver a store that Woodbridge can be proud of.”

Other services will include an ATM, Subway, Collect+ and free home delivery. Customers will also have access to free parking. The Post Office currently situated in the Hamblin Road store will remain open during refurbishments, closing only briefly whilst works on the roof take place.

We'll be hosting a number of community events throughout the refurbishment period for local residents to find out more about the plans for the new generation supermarket.
